Ley, a defenseman for the Whalers from 1972-1979, was a key player for the team during their early days in the World Hockey Association (WHA). One of Ley's most memorable moments came during the 1972-1973 season when he scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA playoffs. This goal helped propel the Whalers to their first championship in franchise history.

Off the ice, Ley was also a leader in the community, often participating in charity events and giving back to the fans who supported him throughout his career. His work ethic and dedication to the game were unmatched, and he set a high standard for his teammates both on and off the ice.
